Our Ministries

We participate in the mission of the Church

by our work or evangelization.

In accordance with the tradition

of our Congregation,

we commit ourselves

to proclaiming the Gospel

among people who do not know Christ

and where Christ is not sufficiently known.

We serve where the Church is in need.

We are challenged to awaken

the sense for God

in our contemporary society

and to make others aware

of the integral salvation of the world

offered by God in Jesus Christ.

From the Constitutions of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing, pp. 1-2.

As was said earlier, the monastic life of Benedictines can basically be described in its motto, Ora et labora (Pray and Work).

Work is normally related to the nature of the community’s apostolate. At a simple community assembly, work assignment  is given by the superior before the start of a school year

At the Priory Chapter of 1975 the Manila Priory elected its prioress for the first time.   Mother Irene Dabalus, OSB was elected.

One of the most significant moves of the 1975 chapter, led by the new prioress, was the clarification and definition of the mission thrust of the priory, setting this in line with the new developments in the Church, inspired by Vatican II.  The Chapter’s efforts resulted in the definition of the four-pronged thrust, henceforth to be the guide and trademark of the priory’s missionary work in the Philippines.

Basically, the four-pronged thrust directs the conduct of the Sisters’ work in their various apostolates.  Thus,

*    the social orientation of the apostolate in schools and in the hospital

*    strengthening of socio-pastoral work

*    direct involvement in the apostolate for indigenous peoples, especially in the
country itself

*    readiness to participate in the apostolate of the congregation’s missions abroad by
sending Filipino missionaries on request of the Generalate.

While sounding simple and “not really new”, the priory was to realize that much effort and will had to be put towards the realization of this new thrust.
